Zohran Mamdani confirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his victory in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he added.
Political Debate
During his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
