The Three Lions to Start Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship campaign at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the anticipated passage for a tournament taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an England men’s game since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the England side for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, should they win the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Launch and Rally
The championship was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they entered the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The opening game of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will include the Dragons if they make it.
The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for European club finals from next season, will appeal to households and help connect with a broader range of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that miss out on the tournament through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Playoffs
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena round out the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches played at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
“The event will be a tournament for the supporters and a celebration of everything we love about the football – its passion and ability to unite individuals.”
More than three million passes, a record for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be made available to supporters.
