Nevertheless, no contemporary observers remain, modern media compelled the production to lean heavily on historical documents, weaving together individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. This approach enabled to introduce audiences beyond the prominent leaders of that era but also to “dozens of others crucial to understanding, several participants lack visual representation.

The filmmaker also explored his particular enthusiasm for territorial understanding. “I love maps,” he observes, “with greater cartographic content throughout this series versus earlier productions I’ve done combined.”

The production crew recorded at nearly a hundred historical locations in various American regions and British sites to preserve geographical atmosphere and partnered extensively with re-enactors. For him, the revolution is a story that “typically is overwhelmed by emotionalism and wistful remembrance and is incredibly superficial and insufficiently honors for what actually took place, and all the participants and the widespread bloodshed.”

The historian argues, an uprising that declared the transformative concept of inherent human rights; a bloody domestic struggle, dividing revolutionaries and royalists; and a worldwide engagement, the fourth in a series of conflicts between Britain, France and Spain for the “prize of North America”.
