Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not produce any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."

"After we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.

Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Activist a participant explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that about the majority of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area indicated two more victims had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff said.
