The network's Premier New Show of 2025 Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
