The Israeli government Gives Green Light to Nineteen New Settlements in Disputed Palestinian Territories

Israel's top security body has voted to recognize the establishment of nineteen new settlements in the disputed West Bank, marking a ongoing push for community development.

Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who advocated for the move in concert with Defence Minister Israel Katz, stated that the approval was intended for preventing the formation of a Palestinian state.

According to global statutes, Jewish communities in the disputed territories are deemed in violation of international law.

The announcement has drawn censure from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "relentless" growth of communities heightens tensions, restricts Palestinian use of land, and jeopardizes the prospects of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Escalating Tensions and Political Fallout

Unrest in the region has escalated since the hostilities in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023, further heightening fears that the growth of communities could solidify Israel's occupation and undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.

The concept of two states involves the formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its seat of government, roughly along the borders that existed prior to the 1967 Middle East war.

Since coming to power in late 2022, the current government in Jerusalem has significantly increased the approval of new settlements and initiated the formal recognition for unauthorised outposts, designating them as "extensions" of established settlements.

Sustained Growth

The latest decision brings the overall count of settlements approved over the preceding 36 months to 69, as stated by Smotrich.

These decisions come only a few days after the United Nations said that construction in settlements had hit its highest level since the year 2017.

The newest round of approvals encompasses the rebuilding of a pair of communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled nearly in 2005.

Previously, the Israeli government authorized twenty-two additional settlements in the occupied West Bank - labeled as the biggest expansion in decades.

Furthermore, the government also approved blueprints last summer to erect in excess of three thousand housing units in the controversial E1 corridor between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a plan that had been frozen for decades amid intense international condemnation.

Regarding that plan, the Finance Minister stated it would "end the concept of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Realities and International Reactions

An estimated seven hundred thousand Israeli settlers reside in around 160 communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to the Israel-based monitoring organization Peace Now. This is territory that Palestinians seek for a prospective sovereign nation.

Settlement expansion has angered neighboring countries who have repeatedly contended it undermines chances for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has furthermore raised concerns about the possible formal annexation of the disputed territories.

Ex- American President Donald Trump had once cautioned the Israeli leadership about this step, telling TIME magazine that Israel would lose all its support from the US if it happened.

Recently, the United Kingdom - together with other countries such as Australia and Canada - acknowledged a State of Palestine, a significant although largely symbolic shift in official stance.

The Israeli government strongly rejected the move, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that a sovereign Palestine "will not happen."
