The Former French President to Pen Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days Behind Bars
The ex-president of France plans a book in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period served behind bars.
This news emerged less than two weeks following the former president left prison as he appeals the guilty verdict for illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to secure election campaign funds linked to the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.
Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts
“Behind bars visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in an extract, implying the memoir centers around his musings while in seclusion instead of wider commentary on the overcrowded and crisis-hit jail system in France.
“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he states. “The noise is alas constant. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”
Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship
At his release request hearing, Sarkozy participated remotely from inside the facility, depicting prison life as exhausting. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who helped make this ordeal tolerable – as it truly is one.”
“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It leaves a mark all who experience it due to its intensity.”
Unprecedented Situation
Sarkozy, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural former head in the European Union and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to serve time in prison.
Ahead of his incarceration he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.
Books in Prison
It is not certain whether he had time to read and critique the texts he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, where a blameless person is imprisoned then breaks out to take revenge.
Daily Reality
Sarkozy remained in isolation to protect him in a cell approximately nine square meters including private facilities at La Santé prison located in the capital. Guards were stationed in an adjacent room.
Sources mentioned his diet consisted just yogurt while inside due to concerns prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Options were available to prepare his own meals but refused this, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if he will detail what he ate in prison.
Defense Viewpoint
The legal representative, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings security would be better released rather than in custody. “He received menacing messages, heard shouts at night and emergency responses in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Case Background
His incarceration began in late October following a French court gave him a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure political donations during his election campaign.
He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial set for next spring.
