The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
