The Actress Fiona Shaw Talks About Her Professional Journey: From Andor to Harry Potter

During a recent conversation, acclaimed actress Fiona Shaw shared insights about her diverse career covering many years and iconic roles.

Andor's Powerful Speech

While talking about her memorable funeral speech in the Disney+ show Andor, Shaw revealed that the initial version included more explicit wording. "I did say a distinct term in my speech," she clarified, "and the writer hoped that Disney would approve it."

The performer described the unique filming conditions for this specific moment. "While I delivered that speech, I was filmed by about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was completely alone in a massive studio, with neither director nor crew members present in the room."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Speaking about the forthcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw shared enthusiasm about the completed filming. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "and what an actor typically doesn't see is the final film."

The actress commended director Georgia Oakley as "really lovely and very assured." The filming took place in beautiful estates across the UK, including locations in Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the nineties version of Persuasion, portraying Mrs. Croft. "The director had specific requirements: without hairpieces and only candlelight," she remembered. "He genuinely wanted to capture the experience of nineteenth-century existence."

Harry Potter Memories

When asked about her experience with the Harry Potter franchise, Shaw talked warmly about working with the late Richard Griffiths. "Richard was the most refined, creative and gifted man," she shared. "He possessed the most mellifluous handwriting and once sent me a note asking to lunch in ornate gothic script."

She described Griffiths as constantly speaking and sharing fascinating anecdotes with herself and the child performers on set. "He had fantastic general knowledge so we would listen captivated by his tales."

Theatrical Work

Talking about her Broadway performance in Medea, Shaw remembered how psychologically challenging the show was. "I encountered one of the ensemble actors several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she shared.

The production continued for years, starting in Dublin, then traveling to England, followed by the American capital, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and ultimately Manhattan. "We grew very close as a cast," she noted.

Approach to Acting

Regarding inquiries concerning her ability to transition between humor and seriousness, Shaw explained that "comedy connects us as it's about breaking conventions." Nevertheless, she admitted that "the night before a comedy, I always sleep poorly, because you have to find the rhythm during performance."

Concerning her method for approaching various roles, Shaw stated: "I discover each one challenging. But even if the character you're portraying is quite distant from you, there is often something about them that you identify with."

Recent Work

Discussing her recent performance in Hot Milk, Shaw described her character Rose as "a difficult person but you can't play anything from that perspective." She explained that Rose suffers from a functional neurological disorder that causes mobility issues.

"She is unaware of the impact she has on her daughter," Shaw observed. "All she knows is that she desires to get better. She's well-intentioned yet unaware. Perhaps that's what many people resemble."

Personal Reflections

When told that viewers consider her ideal as authority figure characters, Shaw answered with amusement: "Goodness me! I'm so not scary. But maybe when infused with purpose, my features can appear threatening."

The actress continued: "In reality sometimes quite scatty so maybe it's redemptive for me to play highly intellectual, methodical personalities. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I avoid criticizing them. Don't be scared – approach and greet me!"

Passion for Words

Discussing her celebrated interpretation of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Shaw expressed her profound relationship with words and verse. "My heart is always in the language," she declared, "since the indicators to everything are there in the choice of words."

She believes that "poetry represents the polished form of language, or the instant that's been preserved." When people reduce to what they truly want to say, it's frequently lyrical."

Audiobook Work

Regarding her praised spoken-word performances, particularly the classic Alice in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I loved reading Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated everybody I knew into it – my friends and other actors."

She described how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and portrayed the Red Queen evoking Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a privilege to record and perform literature," she concluded, "though it requires extended periods of work."

Collaborating with the Director

Remembering her time working with renowned director Terrence Malick on Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as distinctive. "Everything Terrence Malick says and does is unique," she observed.

The actress recounted a particular memory of their initial encounter: "He placed a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most exotic choice in the world."

Shaw also mentioned Malick's unusual approach of asking actors "Do you want to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – inquiries seldom made by other filmmakers. "He only employed natural light," she continued, "meaning actors could perform interior near glass or outside on the street."

Regarding the extensive editing process, Shaw revealed that "He takes approximately three years to complete the movie. I had been told by the producer after two years that I was likely among the primary roles, but when the film came out, I was mostly removed."

She concluded by describing Malick's distinctive approach: "He builds this massive framework, and he takes away many components. He essentially deconstructs films."
