Sovereign to Broadcast Intimate Address on Illness in Television Address
King Charles has filmed a personal message concerning his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's fundraising drive, organised by medical research organisations and a television broadcaster.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the King would discuss his "path to recovery" as a person living with the disease, in a televised statement on this Friday at 20:00 GMT.
The address, filmed within Clarence House two weeks ago, will highlight the importance of routine screenings to increase the likelihood more people catch the condition at an early stage.
This represents a infrequent public commentary on the wellbeing of the King, who has been receiving ongoing care since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. Analysts suggest improbable the King will disclose his type of cancer.
The Campaign's Core Mission
The awareness campaign each year raises funds for scientific studies and patient care and urges people to get check-ups to boost the odds of an prompt identification.
The King's relative openness about his health challenge, and his experience as a patient, has been designed to raise awareness and to persuade more people to get checked - and this will be escalated with this exceptional direct participation.
Up until now the King's main approach to his cancer has been to keep working, preserving a busy schedule despite his ongoing course of therapy, and he seems not to have desired to be defined by his illness.
This year has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, undertaking several foreign visits, notably to Italy and Canada, and hosting the highest tally of official guests to the UK for almost 40 years, which included the German president last week.
The Televised Special Show
Friday evening's awareness broadcast on television, featuring celebrities such as Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will encourage people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.
All three have been personally touched by cancer - Davina McCall said recently she had undergone surgery for breast cancer, while Balding was diagnosed with the illness more than 15 years ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously mentioned his late father, who had a diagnosis and then later leukaemia.
The show will reach out to the roughly millions of people in the UK who health organisations state are not compliant with national health programmes, with an website to let people see if they are qualified for examinations for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.
In an attempt to demystify health tests and illustrate the importance of early diagnosis there will be a live broadcast from cancer clinics at medical facilities in Cambridge.
"The goal is to take the fear surrounding health checks and prove the public that they are not isolated in this," said one of the hosts.
The Landscape of National Services
Right now in the UK, there are a number of NHS cancer screening programmes - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - available to eligible individuals.
A emerging preventative initiative is also being slowly rolled out for anyone at increased risk of contracting the disease, primarily aimed at people aged 55-74 years old, who have a smoking history or were former smokers.
Male patients may request prostate cancer checks, but there is no national programme in place.
Charitable Impact
The fundraising campaign, which has collected a significant sum for many years, is financing multiple medical projects with many patients.
His Majesty, in a message for dignitaries at a gathering for support groups in the spring, had discussed understanding the "overwhelming and at times alarming reality" for cancer sufferers and their support networks.
But he said his first-hand encounter of coping with cancer had shown him that "the most difficult times of disease can be alleviated by the support of carers," as he commended those who looked after cancer patients.
Royal representatives has not revealed what kind of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has received. The King's cancer was identified subsequent to he had had a medical treatment.
