Real Algarve: Exploring Portugal Past the Coastline

“I never object to doing the same walk again and again,” remarked the local guide, kneeling beside a patch of blossoms. “Every visit, you can spot new things – these were not here previously.”

Rising on stems a minimum of a couple of centimeters tall and starring the ground with pale blossoms, the fact that these overnight wonders appeared overnight was a beautiful testament of how swiftly life can develop in this rolling, inland part of the Algarve, the national forest of Barão de São João.

It was also comforting to learn that in an area affected by forest fires in September, species such as fire-resistant trees – which are less flammable due to their minimal resin – were starting to bounce back, in proximity to highly flammable eucalyptus, which impedes other fire-resistant trees such as oak. Community members were being recruited to assist with ecological restoration.

Tourist Figures and Inland Attraction

Travel figures to the Algarve are rising, with this year showing an rise of 2.6 percent on the last year – but most guests go directly to the seaside, despite there being so much more to experience.

The shoreline is certainly wild and dramatic, but the region is also keen to highlight the appeal of its upland zones. With the establishment of throughout the year hiking and cycling trails, in addition to the addition of outdoor events, attention is being drawn to these just as engaging landscapes, including peaks and dense wooded areas.

The Algarve Walking Season hosts a program of several hiking events with broad subjects such as “water” and “ancient ruins” between the start of winter and the end of winter. It’s expected they will motivate visitors year round, boosting the local economy and contributing to stem the tide of the youth moving away in search of work.

Art and Nature Combine

The excursion to the wooded reserve overlapped with a two-day event with the subject of “expression”, based around the pale-colored village north-west of Barão de São João.

In addition to led walks, setting off from the cultural centre, free events included mastering how to make organic pigments, to drama classes, tai chi and drawing. There were a couple of photography exhibitions running as well as several other family-oriented pastimes, such as nature hunts and creating wildlife feeders.

Prior to our casual afternoon printmaking workshop at the cultural centre, our walk into the woodland with Joana had the vibe of an art trail. Signposted at the beginning by monoliths adorned with images of traditional agricultural folk, it was studded along the way with more modest, fixed stones illustrating types of animals, including spiny creatures and lynxes – the lynx’s numbers reviving, due to a rescue facility situated in the fortified settlement of Silves.

Breathtaking Trails and Wild Charm

As the route climbed to its peak, the menhir (standing stone) on the Pedra do Galo trail, it became more lushly forested with the aromatic fragrance of evergreen. There was a fullness to the air and hard, honey-toned bubbles bulged from bark. Chalky rock sparkled beneath our feet and small frogs sat by pool margins, throats vibrating. In the distance, energy generators cartwheeled against the sky.

Francisco Simões, our guide the next day, was again eager to emphasize that these interior zones can be discovered year-round. Signposted trails, established in the past few years, are offshoots of the Via Algarviana, a route that extends from the Spanish boundary for a significant distance, continuously to the Atlantic, and several are now linked to an app that makes navigation simpler.

Nature Tourism and Local Opportunities

Francisco established ecotourism outfit Algarvian Roots in the recent past and provides tours from birdwatching to all-day led walks, all with the identical aims as the AWS: to highlight the area by way of engagement, enlightenment and local understanding.

The creative link is here, too – his family member, potter Margarida Palma Gomes, had instructed us to design azulejos, the characteristic traditional colored ceramic tiles found all over the land, a couple of days before on a festival workshop. Excursions to her workshop, along with to a regional artist, can additionally be organized through Algarvian Roots.

Francisco urged us to play our part for the industry by drinking ample amounts of fine wine capped with cork

After an superb dining experience of meat dish and vegetable in A Charrette in Monchique, a quaint hill settlement flanked by the Algarve’s two highest peaks, the 902-metre Fóia and 774-meter Picota, Francisco guided us down steeply stone-paved lanes and into a narrow path, where an senior duo basked outdoors at the front of their house.

A sharp track guided us into the woodland, the earth scattered with acorns. Here, Francisco was eager to show us oak trees, Portugal’s emblematic species and legally protected since the 1200s. Not just are they naturally flame-retardant, but their pliable outer layer is a means of income for residents, who gather it to trade to other {industries|sectors
