Early Sunday, UK rail authorities reported the detainment of two individuals after a mass stabbing on a railway carriage in the region. New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, revised directives were issued to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in a English town previously.

Yet, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the ethnicity of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are not shared with the public.

A former chief superintendent, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, labeled the requirement for law enforcement to disclose the ethnicity of suspects in incidents involving people of colour as an "unforeseen outcome".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He expressed sympathy for his former colleagues in the force, noting that they are “in a no-win situation”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Response from Officials

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, called it “sad” but necessary for authorities to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, stating that online platforms are leveraged to advance narratives, making it critical for police to provide accurate information to counter rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had demanded a faster response. For instance, Chris Philp pushed for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the public should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. One account named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been yelling a religious phrase.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after police clarified that the arrested individuals were British nationals, certain individuals continued to suggest that details was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the incident was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to official statements to the opposite.

Origin of the Directives

These protocols were developed by the UK police leadership body in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

This move came soon after Reform UK alleged that officials of concealing the details and migrant background of two men accused in a separate case in a UK county.

Precedents

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking a football victory, local authorities revealed that the suspect was white and British to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.
