Our Diamond Family Personal Gaming of the Year List for This Year
So, what did you think of this year in your home? Did it seem all as good as one might claim on online? Full of academic success for your offspring and riotous dress-up gatherings for the adults? Maybe it felt like a swamp of letdowns with only sporadic fun moments? Is any of this actually real, or are we all seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity dental work?
I've assembled everyone together, ready or not, to debate the crucial thing in twelve months: what titles we were obsessed with the most. So here goes:
Game Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my games column."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In reality."
Release Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He was offended that I even asked. Fair enough.
Title Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into acting, but when she took a break from vocals, she was playing Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Release the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can be a man and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is a machine. Superior than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the start. I wish I could deal with my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play any time. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that as written, because I respect the passion, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a punishingly tough Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". How delightful. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when most games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the doorstep at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or phone use, but it aches like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
