Our 10 Most Outstanding Global Albums of the Year 2025

The past twelve months have offered a rich tapestry of global releases that defied expectations. Presenting a selection of ten exceptional albums that characterized the year in music.

10. The Percussionist Sarathy Korwar – There Is Beauty, There Already

The concept of a 40-minute, uninterrupted piece built on cyclical drumming could sound like it isn't the easiest listening experience. But, south Asian percussionist and producer Sarathy Korwar converts this driving beat into a hypnotically captivating album. Directing an trio of three drummers, Korwar crafts a complex percussive vocabulary throughout the record's ten sections. The work references minimalist concepts from Steve Reich alongside traditional Indian musical phrasing, each grounded in the recurrence of a ongoing, driving refrain. The longer one listens, this refrain starts to mirror the hypnotic repetition of ritual music, pulling the listener further into Korwar's distinctive percussive world.

9. The Lebanese Artist Yasmine Hamdan – I Forget, I Remember

Following an hiatus of eight years, Arab vocalist and composer Yasmine Hamdan makes a comeback with a contemplative set of songs. She expands on the Arabic-sung, dub-tinged style that cemented her status in the region's indie music scene since the 1990s. Hamdan's voice is quiet and ruminative, singing delicate melodies atop the string arrangements of a track like Hon and the deep trip-hop beat of Vows. For more upbeat numbers such as Shadia and Abyss, she uses a wavering, longing vocal technique over electronic lines with North African flavors and skittering electronic percussion. The musical backdrop is minimal and understated, yet this simplicity offers the ideal canvas for Hamdan's deeply felt compositions to take center stage. The album proves to be truly deserving of the long anticipation.

8. Debit – Desaceleradas

From Mexico producer Debit excels at uncanny reworkings of archival audio. On her most recent project, Desaceleradas, she focuses on the 90s style of cumbia rebajada – a decelerated, dubby take of the rhythmic Latin American musical style. Debit drags this sound to a near-halt, running its characteristic synths and off-beat rhythm via sheets of distortion and static to create a new, menacing groove. Periodically atmospheric and discomfiting, Debit morphs the celebratory party music of cumbia into a lasting, spectral memory.

Number Seven: The São Paulo Producer DJ K – Radio Libertadora!

Sheer intensity is the key term for the records of São Paulo producer Kaique Vieira, AKA DJ K. Pioneering his own genre of "bruxaria" (witchcraft), Vieira layers a tumult of alarms, pummeling bass tones and screamed lyrics over the enduring Brazilian genre of baile funk. This emulates the driving sound of favela street parties. On his new record, Radio Libertadora!, Vieira ramps up the energy, adding everything from driving techno rhythms to the sound of the Islamic call to prayer into his unruly bruxaria mix. The result is a notably hyperactive and overwhelmingly noisy 40-minute sonic journey. Surrender to the assault and Vieira's brash productions become strangely exhilarating.

Number Six: The Singer Mohinder Kaur Bhamra – Punjabi Disco

Religious vocalist Mohinder Kaur Bhamra's early-80s release of disco beats and Punjabi folk melodies is a rediscovered treasure. Produced by her son, music producer Kuljit Bhamra, Punjabi Disco's ten tracks deliver an strikingly engaging fusion of the synthetic sound of early synthesizers and programmed drums with her melismatic Indian classical singing style. Drum machine patterns mimics the wavelike tones of the tabla, while synthesiser melody doubles the classic sound of the reed organ on tracks such as Pyar Mainu Kar. Elsewhere, Latin-inflected grooves takes center stage on Soniya Mukh Tera, and Nainan Da Pyar De Gaya boasts a up-tempo walking disco bassline. It's a dancefloor fusion delivered over a decade before the rise of Asian Underground music.

5. Enji – Resonance

Mongolian singer Enji's soft latest record, Sonor, develops her jazz-influenced sound to deliver some of her broadest music so far. Departing from her background in traditional Mongolian "long song" singing, the record's 11 tracks range from the gentle Norah Jones-esque melodies of downtempo number Ulbar to the German-language narration lyrics and twanging guitar lines of Unadag Dugui. The album also includes a sprightly, funk-tinged cover of the 1980s Mongolian classic Eejiinhee Hairaar. Featuring a live band rather than her standard setup of guitar and bass, Sonor's sound is still intimate, drawing the listener into the warm soundscape of her singular voice.

4. Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek – Yarın Yoksa

Inspired by the 60s heritage of Anatolian rock established by groups such as Moğollar, Turkish-born, Germany-based singer Derya Yıldırım's latest work alongside her group merges the distinctive buzz of the electrified saz with dreamy Mellotron and classic soul melodies. It's a 1970s throwback sound rooted in Yıldırım's commanding falsetto and influenced by producer Leon Michels' analogue tape aesthetic. But, on classic Turkish songs such as the nursery rhyme Hop Bico and 1960s song Ceylan, the group reaches dynamic new territory. They create sinuous, downtempo grooves and lifting vocals that lend a novel, unconventional spin to the Anatolian psychedelic style.

3. Lido Pimienta – La Belleza

Catholic requiem mass music, Czech harpsichord folksong and orchestral strings all come together on Colombian singer Lido Pimienta's remarkable latest work. Orchestrating music for the sixty-member Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra, Pimienta and producer Owen Pallett journey through a vast range including the liturgical vocals of opener Overturn (Obertura de la Luz Eterna) to the theatrical counterpoint melodies of Aún Te Quiero and the rhythmic reggaeton-inspired beats of the woodwind-heavy El Dembow del Tiempo. Yet, it is Pim
