Ipswich boxer Fabio Wardley Poised to Become WBO World Champion as Oleksandr Usyk Relinquishes Title
England's boxing star is expected to be elevated to heavyweight title holder after Usyk chose to vacate his title
This follows after the champion notified the WBO he would not proceed with a mandatory title defence against Wardley
WBO Statement
The WBO stated that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his title after thoughtful consideration"
The Ukrainian maintains the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having beaten his British opponent at the famous London venue in the summer month to become a double undisputed champion
He originally secured the all-belt title holder in spring 2024 by beating Tyson Fury, before relinquishing one championship shortly after and opting out of facing the obligatory contender
"Boxing official the WBO leader praised the Ukrainian fighter in a official release"
"The WBO extends its profound respect, admiration and gratitude to the Ukrainian champion, an unbeaten multi-division champion"
"His record represents one of the most extraordinary and historic of the contemporary boxing period"
The organization continued that its institution will continue to support Usyk and his team"
Belt Timeline
Usyk won the world title in 2021 by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to defend it four times
In mid-year, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a required title defense against interim champion Joseph Parker, only for a champion's back problem to force the postponement of the bout
British Fighter's Journey
But Wardley, 30, took the interim title from the New Zealander with a major surprise in the championship rounds at London's O2 Arena in the previous month and was required to challenge Usyk before the end of September
The WBO is yet to officially confirm the British fighter's elevation but his manager Warren believes it is a formality
"England has a recent title holder and a rising boxing talent"
"One of the most incredible stories throughout my decades as a promoter and I could not be happier for the British fighter"
"Major contests coming up for 2026 as he protects his championship and establishes his place in the fighting community"
