At least 13 individuals killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
